Picture a procurement manager in Surabaya typing a question into an AI assistant: "Which companies in Indonesia can build a warehouse system that syncs with Shopee?" The answer names a handful of vendors, one sentence each, with links. If your company is not in that paragraph, you were never in the running, and no ranking report will tell you.
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your content easy for AI-driven search tools to find, understand, trust and cite. These tools include Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. The honest summary: most of GEO is good SEO done thoroughly, meaning crawlable pages, direct answers, verifiable facts and consistent information about your company across the web. The new parts are how you structure facts, how you earn corroboration from other sources and how you measure visibility in answers rather than in rankings.
The term was popularized by a 2023 academic paper from researchers at Princeton and other institutions. Since then, plenty of agencies have started selling GEO as a mystery. It is not one, and this guide shows what actually matters for a company website.
How AI search tools choose what to cite
Most AI search experiences follow the same broad pattern. The system turns the user's question into one or more searches, retrieves candidate pages from a search index, picks the passages that best answer the question, and has a language model write a response that cites some of those sources. It is the same retrieval idea behind company knowledge assistants, which we explained in what RAG is.
That pattern has four practical consequences:
- If you are not indexed, you cannot be cited. Google states that a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet to show as a link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, with no additional technical requirements. Crawlability comes first, so start with our technical SEO checklist.
- Passages matter more than pages. Retrieval picks paragraphs. A page that answers a question clearly in two sentences under a relevant heading is easier to use than one that buries the answer in marketing copy
- Corroboration matters. When several independent sources agree on a fact about you, an AI system has more reason to repeat it
- Specifics beat adjectives. "We build warehouse apps that work offline for logistics companies in Java and Sumatra" can be quoted. "We deliver innovative solutions" cannot
SEO and GEO side by side
| Aspect | Classic SEO | Generative engine optimization |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page for a query | Be mentioned or cited in a generated answer |
| What competes | The whole page | Passages, facts and information about your company |
| Main signals | Relevance, links, page experience | Relevance plus clarity, corroboration and consistency |
| Content style | Comprehensive pages for a keyword | Direct answers, definitions, comparisons, concrete numbers |
| Off-site work | Backlinks | Mentions, reviews and consistent profiles on trusted sites |
| Measurement | Rankings, clicks, impressions | Citations across a fixed set of prompts, AI referrals, branded search |
The two overlap far more than they differ. Nothing in GEO requires you to abandon SEO, and a site with weak SEO rarely does well in AI answers.
Make your site easy to retrieve and quote
Let the right crawlers in
Several AI companies run more than one crawler, and each does a different job. OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot gathers pages for ChatGPT search, while GPTBot collects content that may be used to train models. Google-Extended is a robots.txt token that controls the use of your content for Gemini models, and Google says it does not affect inclusion in Google Search. Bingbot feeds Bing, which also powers Copilot's web answers, and PerplexityBot indexes pages for Perplexity. Make a separate decision for each. Many companies allow the search crawlers, because those bring citations and visitors, and decide about training crawlers on their own terms.
Write answer-first pages
For each service, write the page a buyer actually wants: what it is, who it suits, how it works, what drives the cost and how long it takes. Lead each section with the direct answer, then add detail. Use question-style headings where they read naturally, and put comparisons in tables. Server-rendered pages, as discussed in Next.js for business websites, make sure crawlers see the same text your visitors see.
Publish facts that can be verified
AI answers lean on concrete details. Useful ones for a B2B company include the cities you serve, the industries you work with, the systems you integrate with, typical project phases, price ranges with their assumptions, certifications you actually hold and the date each page was last reviewed. Never invent numbers to sound authoritative. A wrong fact repeated by an AI assistant is much harder to correct than a wrong fact on your own page.
Keep your company identity consistent
Use the same company name, address, phone number and service descriptions on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn page, marketplace stores and directory listings. Add Organization structured data with your logo and sameAs links to official profiles, plus LocalBusiness data for each office. Inconsistent details, such as an old address on a directory, give AI systems conflicting signals about who you are.
Indonesian buyers search in Bahasa Indonesia, in English and in a mix of both. If you serve both audiences, publish complete pages in both languages rather than machine-translated fragments, so each language has strong passages to retrieve.
Earn corroboration beyond your own website
Your own site is one source among many. AI systems also draw on industry publications, news coverage, review platforms, partner listings and community discussions. Practical ways to build that presence:
- Ask satisfied clients for reviews on platforms they already use, such as your Google Business Profile, and reply to reviews professionally
- Publish project write-ups only with client permission, and make them specific about the problem, the approach and the result
- Make sure partner pages list you accurately, such as technology vendors you are certified with or platforms you integrate with
- Contribute expert commentary to industry media and associations in your sector
- Speak at events, and check that the event page describes your company correctly
Avoid shortcuts. Fake reviews, paid placements disguised as editorial and mass-produced articles create risk without lasting benefit. Google's spam policies, updated in March 2024, explicitly target scaled content abuse: large volumes of low-value pages made mainly to manipulate search results.
Measure visibility in AI answers
Rankings do not show whether AI assistants mention you, so build a simple measurement routine:
- Create a prompt panel. Write 20 to 30 questions your buyers actually ask, in Bahasa Indonesia and English, such as "software house for inventory systems in Jakarta" or "berapa biaya membuat aplikasi kasir"
- Run it monthly across the assistants your buyers use. Record whether you are mentioned, whether you are cited with a link and whether the description is accurate
- Track AI referrals in Google Analytics by grouping sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com and gemini.google.com
- Watch Search Console and branded search. Google counts traffic from its AI features within the overall Web totals of the Performance report, without a separate breakdown, so look for trends rather than exact attribution
- Ask new leads how they found you, with "AI assistant" as an explicit option in your contact form
Answers vary between runs and between users, so look for patterns across months, not single results.
A note on llms.txt: it is a 2024 community proposal for a file that summarizes a site for language models. Google has said its search systems do not use it. Publishing one is harmless, but it is no substitute for the work above.
FAQ
Is generative engine optimization different from SEO?
It is mostly an extension of SEO rather than a replacement. AI search tools retrieve pages from search indexes, so crawlability, relevance and quality still decide whether you are considered at all. GEO adds emphasis on clear, quotable passages, verifiable facts and consistent company information across the web, and it measures results by mentions and citations in answers rather than by rankings alone.
Should we block AI crawlers to protect our content?
Treat search crawlers and training crawlers separately. Blocking crawlers that power AI search, such as OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot, makes it harder for those tools to cite you. Training crawlers such as GPTBot, and the Google-Extended token, involve a separate business decision about whether your content may be used to train models. For most company websites, whose goal is to be found, allowing search crawlers makes sense.
Can we pay to appear in AI answers?
Not in the organic part. Citations in AI answers are chosen by the system, and no agency can legitimately guarantee them. Some platforms have started showing ads alongside or inside AI answers, but those are labelled ads with their own budgets and rules. Be wary of anyone promising guaranteed placement in ChatGPT or in Google's AI answers.
How long does GEO take to show results?
Changes to your own site count only after search engines recrawl it, which can take days to weeks depending on how often your pages are crawled. Building third-party mentions and reviews takes months. Plan on a quarterly cycle: fix technical access and key pages first, run your prompt panel monthly, and judge progress over two or three quarters rather than week to week.
How Weaveward can build this for you
We would start with an audit of how AI search tools see you today: crawler access and rendering, the facts your key pages state, consistency across your external profiles, and a baseline run of a prompt panel built from your buyers' real questions. From there we would restructure your most important service pages answer-first, add Organization, LocalBusiness and breadcrumb structured data, and set up analytics that separate AI referrals from other traffic.
Our web development team can deliver this on your existing site or as part of a rebuild, with a monthly citation report so you can see what changes. To find out how AI assistants describe your company right now, talk to our team.
